Sometimes it's meant as a joke, often it's merely an assumption, always it's annoying and born of ignorance. Whatever the intention, it's not funny, not true, and not acceptable.
Yesterday on CBC Radio I heard it again, with a slightly different twist. It happened on a call-in program about wedding planning & etiquette. Two experts offered their advice. A caller said some her wedding guests were unhappy at receiving email invitations rather than printed cards. She did not say who these people were. At this pointed I dreaded what I feared was about to come.
It did. Everyone, including the host, assumed poor old Gramma complained because, as we all know, women over 60 can't remember to check their emails every day. Poor old dears.
So. As a 70-something, Almost-Great-Gramma, I have used email since before my two granddaughters, who are about to become mothers, were born. Ditto for friends and family my age. I check my emails at least once a day, usually more often. And if I email a woman over 60 I expect she'll reply the same day or next. Much more reliably than the below 30s who usually need a text message that says, "Check your emails, I sent you something interesting!!"
My granddaughters both sent e-vites for wedding showers and parties and I thought these were a great idea. Wish we'd had them back in the day! So easy to keep track of! Just post the date to your calendar and it's there if you need it. Perfect!
And bonus! No more paper to clutter up the recycling bin!
So, who are these guests that object to email invitations? The under 30s?
News flash! Women in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and into their 90s are not stupid! They do not suddenly forget how to use a computer! If anyone forgets to check their email nowadays it's most likely a young person. And, in defence of young women, who use messaging more than emails, not all of them are glued to their phones!
The photo above shows the best fish & chips I've had in many years. And it was gluten free! The Fish on Fourth restaurant in Sidney, BC looks like a little take out shop until you step inside. Friendly staff, great seafood, and an extensive GF menu. Who could ask for more?
